Our trip to London in June/July 2010 was an interesting opportunity for me to get to know the capital of the UK.
Still being pretty tired because of the early getting up in Berlin, we arrived at Gatwick Airport on Tuesday morning and from this moment on I realized that public space in London is even more crowded than in Berlin, especially at the subway stations. Comparing the German and the British capital, after one or two days it became obvious that Berlin is just a village. Aside from our miserable hostel, London is such an impressive and pulsating, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic city which presents everything one dimension bigger than Berlin. During our stay we visited many different sights like the British Museum, Camden market or the Tate Modern Gallery, in which the Globe Theatre impressed me most. On Wednesday evening we watched “Henry VIII”, one of Shakespeare´s historic plays, there. Although having to stand the whole time and not understanding large parts of the actors´ dialogues, it was an entertaining and interesting experience. My biggest disappointment was the fact that visitors have to pay in order to be allowed to enter the main hall of St. Paul´s Cathedral, as we found out during our visit of the church. Besides, we had some funny nights at the hostel, one time somehow I got drunk because of “Dr. Pepper” (a cheap British copy of cola). All in all, the trip to London with my Advanced Course English was enjoyable and the best school trip I have ever had.
