  • 1742: Ralph Allen commissioned architect John Wood, the Elder, to build the mansion

  • Was designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building
  • 1991: fire destroys much of interior, damage can be repaired

  • was created by local entrepreneur and philanthropist Ralph Allen from about 1734 until his death in 1764

  • 18th-century landscape garden, designed by the poet Alexander Pope and the landscape gardener Capability Brown
  • owned by National Trust
  • in style of typical “English Gardens”
  • Nov 2006: restoration project starts
  • 2007: restauration is completed
